Antwan Rufus, 36, of Middletown, was sentenced to 16 ½ years in prison, followed by 10 ½ years of special parole, after being convicted of multiple charges, including assault and unlawful possession of a firearm, Middlesex State’s Attorney Michael A. Gailor announced Tuesday, Feb. 18.

Prosecutors said Rufus stepped out of a car in Traverse Square and opened fire on a man he had previously threatened. He fired six shots, striking the victim multiple times and causing serious injuries.

At the time of the shooting, Rufus was prohibited from possessing a firearm because of prior felony convictions. A jury found him guilty in October 2024 of first-degree assault, carrying a pistol without a permit, carrying a weapon in a motor vehicle, and two counts of criminal possession of a firearm, officials said.
